Taking the Mystery Out of China: Solving Your Communications and IT Infrastructure Challenges

One of the great things about my role at AT&T is that people tend to view me as something of a problem-solver, especially when it comes to networks and communications. And I like tackling problems and finding solutions; the more complex, the better.

And that thought brings me to my topic today: China. Lately I’ve been fielding a lot of questions about China. People want to know what the regulatory environment is really like and if the telecoms and government are easy to work with. In short, they want to know what their company can expect should they make the move to expand their business into the region.

The first thing to know about China is that everything about it is… vast. Geographically, it encompasses over 3.7 million square miles (or almost 9.6 sq. km). But with a population of over 1.3 billion people, and an average about 10 percent GDP growth in the past 10 years, it represents one of the best opportunities for companies looking to grow and expand either their consumer or manufacturing base. That said, doing business in China is still a challenge to many MNCs, even 30 years after it declared its market open. Bear in mind that different regions of China are different from each other. For example, the eastern coastal areas are more developed in terms of infrastructure readiness and service quality, while the inner provinces are still catching up.

The good news is that companies don’t have to go it alone. AT&T has been in China for over 29 years, establishing relationships and forging partnerships with key telecom players. We signed the very first Sino-foreign joint venture in China with the ability to provide you the needed local contract local billing. In November, 2011 we also entered into a strategic framework agreement with China Telecom to expand our existing relationship so that we can deliver advanced global solutions to multi-national corporations.
